Issues Facing Santa CruzHomeless NeedsSanta Cruz can be proud of emergency housing we are building on Highway 9 for homeless women with children and homeless families. I voted with the Council to approve this project and it is now nearing completion. We have also made good progress in approving many more affordable Single Resident Occupancy (SRO) housing units. I supported liberalized ordinances and many new "entry level" housing units are now completed or are under construction. Our future efforts should be directed toward a year-round emergency shelter instead of the expensive winter-only use of the National Guard Armory. Also, we should seek to establish an affordable car campground in the region. These projects should be sponsored and operated regionally and not solely by the City of Santa Cruz. The Continuum of Care program is a likely agency to do so. See also:
