Issues Facing Santa CruzOhlone ParkThe prospect of creating Depot Site Park at the gateway to the beach and wharf area is now a reality! Construction is well underrway and nearing completion. I am proud to have supported this project at every step. The inspiration of all the people who first urged us to pursue this idea is a great gift to the City of Santa Cruz. They are to be congratulated for their tireless work and remarkable vision. One portion of railroad property is still in use as a City corporation yard. The new General Plan should include language that earmarks this piece of the rail right-of-way for uses compatible with this special park. The original concept for this park was to include early Native Americans from this area and integrate the new portions of the park with nearby Neary's Lagoon. As the park is integrated into that broader area, we need to revisit the naming process for City parks and seriously consider the desire of the early advocates to name this park or some part of it Ohlone Park.
